Historical Fiction

Reader review: “Absolutely stunning book. Set during The Troubles in Ireland and the IRA, it’s about a couple from two different backgrounds. It’s gripping, heartbreaking and brilliantly compelling.”

Reader review: “One of my favourite books, I didn’t like history at school, but reading this sums up some of the amazing things woman did to help in war time, a moving book on so many levels. I’ve read a few of Kate Quinn books & I can say they are all so good. Happy reading :0)”
Reader review: “Beautifully written story based on historical fact during WWII. A story of love, friendship, resilience and courage. I was gripped after the first chapter, loved it from start to finish.”

Reader review:
“An absolutely beautiful book that tugs at the heart strings. I adore books that weave both nature and human connection, and this was no exception. The depth of characters was very well written, would recommend to everyone.”

Reader review:

Holly’s review:
“I’ve always been a massive fan of Fleetwood Mac and a lot of the inspiration for this book was taken from that band. I immediately listened to Rumours over and over again, and for an album that I have listened to so many times, it definitely made me think of the story behind the songs. And as with all these things it was a springboard to start listening to every single podcast and watching every single documentary about Fleetwood Mac that’s out there. For me, it was a really immersive book about the life of a rock band in the 70’s.”

Reader review:
“Binge worthy goodness from Taylor Jenkins Reid. Lots of twists and entwined storylines, while you’re transported to Malibu in the ’80s.”

Reader review:
“This is the sort of book that you can dive into and lose yourself in. A well-plotted, well-researched , absorbing story with lots of characters, both likeable and not so likeable but depicted in all their complexity. The prose is fluid, the reading effortless and the fact that it takes place at the court of Christian the fourth of Denmark makes it all the more interesting.”

How to Stop Time by Matt Haig book cover

Reader review:
A fascinating story of a man who has lived through different times in history. Matt perfectly combines fantasy fiction with a touch of romance. A must-read.”

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah, book cover

Reader review:
I didn’t know much about the Great Depression before reading this. The gripping story exemplifies the struggles, the resilience and the enduring hope of a family experiencing it. A fantastic read for anyone who just loves great storytelling.”

Julie Thomas the Keeper Of Secrets book cover
Reader review:
“Well written and Miss Thomas stated it had taken 7 years of research to write, which was evident as I got further into the book. A story about music and a family torn apart by war. It’s worth curling up in a comfy chair and reading.”
The Crooked Branch Jeanine Cummins book cover

Reader review:
“The juxtaposition of the tragedy of Ginny Doyle’s life with the comedy of Magella’s post-partum blues kept me reading. The only regret I have is that it ended. A masterpiece.”

Sarah Winman Still Life book cover

Reader review:
“Each character was just wonderful and I cared for and cheered on each and every one! Their narratives brought them to life in a personal and often sad way, but always with a sense of humour. There are elements of ‘too much of a coincidence’ but that didn’t really spoil it for me, in fact it probably added to the magic of the story! If you only read one book this year, read this.”

Reader review:
“The BEST book I’ve read this year, it’s not my normal thriller but more magical realism and is so so SO good!”

Reader review:
“Despite the horrific subject matter – a reminder of the evil that can exist – the strength of human spirit and love is inspiring.”
