What are Supermoons, and when do they occur in 2024? We have five key dates for your diary, starting with February 9th.
You may have seen the name Supermoon attached to a full or new moon but it’s not always clear what this means and why it’s only happens at certain times.
The simple explanation is a Supermoon is when a full or new moon occurs at the closest point to earth during its orbit. Because of its proximity to earth the moon appears larger and brighter in the sky, earning it the title Supermoon.
It’s said that a full moon can appear around 14% bigger and 30% brighter during this time. The term Super New Moon is less frequently referred to, and this is thought to be because it’s not visible at all from earth. But, it doesn’t stop it affecting how you feel.
A full and new moon brings a shift in energy, signalling either the inception of a new journey or the completion of a significant chapter. A Supermoon amplifies this already powerful energy, so it is important to make the most of it.
How often do Supermoons occur?
Every lunar cycle holds a full moon and a new moon, but not every full moon is a Supermoon. There are usually two to four full Supermoons within a year.
Supermoons are often found in succession of one and other, this is due to the fact the moon in in orbit close to the earth, which it will stay in for two to five full moons before returning to a more distant part of its orbit.
When are the Supermoons in 2024?
We are going to see two full Supermoons in 2024.
18th September 2024, The Harvest Full Moon
17th October 2024, The Hunters Full Moon
Plus three super new moons in 2024 on;
9th February 2024
10th March 2024
8th April 2024*
*This date is particularly special too as it is also a Solar Eclipse, although sadly we won’t be able to see this from the UK.
When is the best time to experience a Supermoon?
Like any other Full Moon, the best time to view a Super Full Moon is just after moonrise. The moon illusion that occurs when the moon is low in the sky makes it appear even bigger and brighter and really give it that ‘wow’ factor.
