You can master the eyeliner-look that works best for you. Read on for the perfect products and the must-have brushes.
Let’s talk eyeliner!
Whenever I think about eyeliner I picture glamorous icons like Bridget Bardot, The Ronettes and Marilyn Monroe – huge cultural influences in beauty. Trends come and go and Holly and I love experimenting with new and retro liner looks.
The starting point to discovering what look works best for you is remembering everyone’s eye shape is different, so it can take time to find an eyeliner flick style that you love. Take me, for example, I have small eyes and have evolved my flick to more of a smudge which looks much better on me. Next you have to practise, practise, practise!
The great news is that in 2024, we are spoilt with some of the most advanced eyeliner products ever. They cater for every type of consistency and application you could wish for. These are my favourites. So, buckle up, there’s something here for everyone.
4 of the best value eyeliners
1. Rimmel London, Exaggerate Liquid Eye Liner, £5.95
This Rimmel London cult-classic eyeliner will not budge. Its smooth, highly-pigmented formula glides on easily and can last up to 16 hours. It’s smudge-proof and flake-proof and great value if you’re experimenting.
2. 3ina, The Colour Pen Eyeliner, £13
These colour eyeliners from 3ina are a game changer. 3ina really has cornered the makeup market when it comes to combining quality with playful products. These liners come in 9 unique, vivid shades – each with a sleek nib design for precise eyeliner application.

If you just want classic black, they do have an amazing 24 hour black pen liner too, with a super-precise tip.
The vegan formula has an intense matte finish that promises to last 24 hours.
4. Sculpted By Aimee, EasyGlide Precision Liquid Eyeliner, £19
Sculpted by Aimee has recently launched this superlong-wearing and highly pigmented liner. I love how easy it is to create the perfect flick with this precise pointed applicator.
I’m also a fan of a brown liquid liner as it’s less intense than solid black, and this is the perfect brown shade.
3 of the best luxury eyeliners
1. Suqqu, Colour Ink Liquid Eyeliner, £26
SUQQU’s colour ink eyeliner is a long-lasting liquid liner and a go-to in my MUA kit as I know it will last the whole evening! I adore the pot, and the applicator as the fine felt tip brush is amazing for precision.
2. Hourglass, Voyeur Waterproof Liquid Liner, £35
Hourglass’s Liquid Liner is the ultimate long-wearing, waterproof formula. The tapered shape tip will help you grow in confidence with ease of application. I find it glides on so easily and dries quickly to minimise smudging, promising all-day, transfer-free wear.
3. Vieve, Power Ink Liner, £21
What I love most about this product is that the precision brush allows you to create the finest of details whilst the smooth-flowing ink glides like a dream! The black shade is a super powerful “midnight black “ and they also do a dark brown which I love too.

Tutorials: how to achieve four timeless eyeliner styles
1. The Iconic 60’s Classic
Think The Ronettes and Bridget Bardot!
What product is best:
To achieve this dramatic, all round, winged look, you will need to apply using a chunky crayon and a kohl gel pencil.
How to achieve this look:
Start with the line application and use cotton buds to blend out.
Then bring underneath and apply to both top and bottom water lines for maximum impact.
2. The Classic Winged Flick
This is a timeless look which you can master with a little patience but once you’ve nailed it you’ll have it for life.
What product is best:
Pens are great for this style because a good eyeliner nib is essential.Take a little time to practise how to hold the pen and work your wrist whilst applying the liner.
How to achieve this look:
- Start small and work your way up to more dramatic flicks.
- I break it down into three sections: the flick, the middle and the corner.
Personally, I master the flick first and then join the line up to it. If it’s your first time, see it like a dot-to-dot puzzle. - When bringing the line into the corners I suggest looking down slightly to gain access and get the line as neat as possible.
- Always have cotton buds to hand to help you tidy up and perfect.
3. The Smudged Eyeliner
I love a smudged eyeliner! It adds mystery and is very forgiving if you make a mistake. I find a smudged eyeliner is superb in colours such as greens, plums and soft browns as they produce a more subtle look.
What product is best:
You can use any product to make the line but I particularly like a kohl style gel liner for this.
If you want to add a smudge flick, use an angled brush.
How to achieve this look:
- Apply the line.
- You can add a smudge flick and use an angled brush to smudge outwards
- Tidy up with a cotton bud for neater lines.
- I love that you can use your finger to create a smudge line too. (The NYX gel liner I mentioned above comes with a built-in brush at the end for you to smudge the product outwards.)
4. The ‘Creative’ Eyeliner
Being super creative with eyeliner is the area I adore. Once you’ve mastered the basic flick, you can have so much fun with your makeup by thinking out of the box.
From a ‘floating’ line…to a dot added here and there!
These styles are great for parties and festivals and for standing out from the crowd and expressing yourself.
My advice is to gather some images you wish to create from Pinterest and practise, practise, practise!
Have Fun!
