Spots can be a nightmare whether they happen in your teens or mid-life -but don’t panic. Beauty guru, Ateh Jewel shares her top skin saviours.
The only flashbacks from the 80s, 90’s and noughties most of us want are musical ones rather than flashbacks of spot-prone skin. But sliding into mid-life the hormonal imbalances, which cause spots and oily skin in our teens, can reappear.
So, what we all need are skin saviours to help those blemishes. Rather than reaching for a dab of toothpaste (anyone else do this back in the day?) these products will work far better to help your skin find its balance and look fresh, healthy and glowing again.
10 Spot Prone Skin Saviours
1. Aesop, Control Serum 9ml, £17
This clear gel is super discreet and calming and cooling. It is packed full of salicylic acid, which helps give gentle exfoliation, and skin brightening Vitamin C.
There is also soothing niacinamide, with a delicious herbaceous citrus scent. Slather on liberally until your spot disappears.
2. Dr. Paw Paw 3-in-1 Cleansing Balm, £15
A great cleanser, in my opinion, solves 99.9% of most skin issues. If your skin is freaking out, don’t be scared of a cleansing balm. This Dr. Paw Paw balm helps remove make-up, waterproof mascara and excess sebum.
The olive oil, jojoba and papaya seed oil all help to brighten, hydrate and restore.
3. Seoulista, Brightening Instant Facial, £7.99
This is my go-to face mask when I want my skin to glow and I also need help with pigmentation after a blemish blow-up. The sheet mask is laced full of skin brightening Vitamin C which helps with skin inflammation.
AHAs help gently exfoliate the skin and even out skin tone and coconut gives nutrient-rich moisture so your skin doesn’t feel stripped.
4. REN Clean Skincare Radiance Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic, £30
This iconic leave-on skin refining toner helps to slough off dead skin cells and exfoliate without irritating the skin.
Daily use can help with the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation and the lactic acid and willow bark will help with spot-prone skin and help boost your glow.
5. OmniluX, Blemish Eraser, £96
When it’s time to whip out the big guns, reach for Omnilux Blemish eraser. I know it is expensive but this dermatologist-endorsed blue and red light therapy mini-device gives targeted help as it kills acne-causing bacteria. It can reduce or eliminate active acne and blemishes with no pain, side effects or downtime.
6. Avène, Cleanance Aqua Gel, £22
This is great for combination/oily skin as the light texture helps to moisturise and soothe. Thanks to Avène thermal spring water, mattifying monolaurin and niacinamide, it leaves skin feeling fresh with its non-greasy aqua-gel texture.
7. Evolve, Salicylic Rescue Serum £25
I love serums as they are a great addition to any skin care routine and help offer targeted treatment.
This serum has a silky soft texture with aloe vera and willow bark extract to help you decrease sebum production and blemishes, and can aid preventing future breakouts.
8. CeraVe, Blemish Control Cleanser, £13
This gel-to-foam cleanser infuses 2% salicylic acid to banish new blemishes and treat acne. Hectorite clay absorbs excess oil and minimises shine.
Three essential ceramides plus niacinamide also help to lock in moisture, so skin isn’t stripped and still feels soothed and soft.
9. Dermalogica, Daily Milkfoliant, £65
This is the exfoliator for people who don’t do exfoliators. This powder formula with oat and coconut is activated when you add a splash of water and creates a creamy cappuccino, foam-whipped texture.
Papain extract helps to resurface the skin, while soothing and calming.
Remember if you start getting spots there’s no need to panic. With a consistent skincare routine, plenty of hydration, sleep, less stress, a healthy diet and these spot-saviours, healthy balanced skin is in sight.
