The Sun Stops on 21st December. The Universe is Asking You to Do the Same

On 21st Decemeber the sky takes the stage, and it’s about to do something quite remarkable: nothing at all.

That’s what solstice means. The word comes from the Latin for “sun standing still”, and for a few days the Sun hangs at almost the same low height at midday before it turns and starts to climb. The turning point arrives at 8.50pm on the 21st, and from tonight the days begin, very quietly, to lengthen.

The sky is stacking the deck

This is where 2026 gets interesting. On the 21st December, the Moon is waxing, a bright, almost-full gibbous riding high in the winter sky, and the Cold Moon itself fills at 1.28am on Christmas Eve. It’s the biggest Supermoon of 2026, and the last. A full Moon sits opposite the Sun, so a low winter Sun means a high, bright Moon, and December’s climbs higher than any other of the year. Look up on Christmas Eve and you’ll find Orion, Jupiter and Mars keeping it company.

So, the longest night of the year comes with two lights growing at once: the Sun on its way back, and the Moon building towards its peak. At the very moment of the solstice the Sun slips into Capricorn, the sign of patience and the long game. The whole sky is telling you the same thing: something is on its way, and you don’t have to hurry it.

And the light has already begun slipping back in. The earliest sunsets of the year came a couple of weeks ago, so your evenings have been quietly stretching, even while the mornings stay dark. Fitting, really, that the light returns at the very hour you’ll be lighting your candle.

What it means for you

The solstice lands in the most frantic week of the year, which is rather the point. The universe has issued its own permission slip. Nothing on the 21st has to be finished that night.

At 8.50pm, put the phone down and light a candle. Ask yourself one question and answer it honestly on paper: what do I want more of when the light comes back? Keep it small and specific. It might be to take more time for yourself, or it might be a new job.

Then wait for Christmas Eve. When the Cold Moon fills in the early hours, treat it as the second half of the ritual. The Sun brings the light back, and the Moon helps you let go of what you’d rather not carry into the new year. Write down what you’re releasing, then tear it up, or burn it safely in a fireproof dish.

That’s all it takes. A candle, a question, and a few quiet minutes in the middle of the chaos. You don’t need a visit to Stonehenge.

Light your WYLDE MOON candle, let the longest night be a pause rather than a problem, and trust that the light is already on its way back.
