Every year it’s the same story. Day and night in perfect balance. Light and dark meeting as equals. Nature pausing before it tips into the dark half of the year.
On Wednesday 23rd September, at 1.06am GMT, the sun crosses the celestial equator and gives us our most even split of light and dark all year.
But the world balancing itself was never really the point. It does that regardless of us. The real question is what you’re carrying into the next six months, and whether you’re ready to put some of it down.
You’ve been in “more” mode for a while now
Think about the version of you that showed up in June. More plans, more brightness, more doing. Summer always asks that of us, which is fine, if that’s genuinely you right now. It’s less fine if you’ve just been running on momentum, only saying yes because the season expected it rather than because you wanted to.
This is the first honest moment all year to ask which one it’s been.
What’s actually worth carrying forward
Long before it had an astronomical name, this point in the year was when people took stock of what they’d grown and let the rest go before winter set in. You’re not harvesting crops, but you are carrying a version of yourself forward.
So, what’s worth keeping? A habit that made you feel more like you. A friendship that gives you energy back instead of taking it. A boundary you finally held.
And what was just noise? A commitment you never wanted. A way of showing up that wasn’t really you at all.
Keep the first. Let the second go.
This isn’t about a five-point plan
Resist the urge to treat this like New Year’s quieter cousin, all fresh starts and new routines. The equinox isn’t asking you to build anything. It’s asking you to notice something, while the light still lets you.
Take a moment to notice
All you need is ten minutes somewhere quiet, as the light starts to go. Light a soothing candle and ask yourself two honest questions.
What am I keeping from this year. What am I ready to let go of.
Write the answers down or just sit with them, either works. The days will keep tipping towards dark regardless. What you do with this one moment of balance before they do, that part’s yours.
