Too Many Tabs Open? It Might Be Time to Close a Few

You know the feeling. You’re trying to get something done and everything is running slowly. You click, you wait, you click again. Nothing responds the way it should. And then you look up at your screen and count. Seventeen tabs. Twenty-three tabs. A browser so overloaded it’s given up trying to keep pace with you.

Now look at your life.

The favour you said you’d do last month that’s still sitting there, quietly loading. The commitment you agreed to in a moment of guilt that you’ve been dreading ever since. The group chat you haven’t muted. The invitation you accepted because saying no felt harder than saying yes. The plans you made when you had more energy than you currently own.

Tabs. All of them. Running in the background. Draining the system whether you’re actively using them or not.

The tabs nobody talks about

We’re good at identifying the obvious drains; the job that’s wrong, the relationship that’s run its course. But it’s rarely the big things that crash the system. It’s the accumulation of the small ones.

The weekly commitment that made sense eighteen months ago but doesn’t anymore. The person you always leave feeling inexplicably tired. The obligation that started as a one-off and quietly became permanent. The version of yourself you’re still performing for people who knew you years ago.

None of these feel significant enough to address on their own. Together they are running your battery into the ground.

Why we don’t close the tabs

Partly because closing a tab feels like giving up. Like admitting we took on too much or made a wrong turn. There’s a particular kind of stubbornness that keeps us running things we stopped benefiting from long ago; as though endurance is its own reward.

And partly because we’ve confused having a full life with having a good one. The two are not the same thing. A full life can still feel empty if nothing in it is actually yours.

How to start closing things down

You don’t need to do it all at once. A browser restored to one clean tab overnight is a shock to the system; and besides, some of what you’re running genuinely matters and deserves to stay open.

Start by simply looking. Make a quiet, honest inventory of everything currently running in the background of your life. Your commitments, your obligations, your relationships, your recurring yes-es. Notice which ones you open with something that feels like energy and which ones you open with something that feels like dread.

The dread ones are your starting point.

Some can be closed immediately; a message, a conversation, a quiet decision made just for you. Others need a little more time; a gentle unwinding rather than a hard stop. But even deciding that a tab will eventually close creates instant relief. The system starts to breathe again the moment you stop pretending everything needs to stay open forever.

What’s left when you close the noise

Space. Actual, tangible space in your days and your head and your energy. Space that you get to decide how to fill; or whether to fill at all.

Because here’s what nobody tells you about protecting your energy. It isn’t really about saying no. It’s about creating enough room to say a genuine, wholehearted, present yes to the things that actually matter.

You can’t do that with twenty-three tabs open.

Close a few. See what’s left.

You might be surprised how fast everything starts to run again. 🌙
