You Have Two Voices in Your Head. Here’s How to Tell Them Apart

You’ve been told to trust your gut. Follow your instincts. Listen to your inner voice. And you would; if there weren’t quite so many of them.

Because here’s what nobody mentions. You don’t have one inner voice. You have two. And they use exactly the same tone, the same language, the same quiet authority. Which is precisely what makes them so difficult to tell apart.

One is your ego. One is your intuition. And the difference between listening to the right one and the wrong one can change absolutely everything.

What’s the difference?

Your ego isn’t villainous. It developed to protect you; to keep you safe, comfortable and away from anything that might cause pain or embarrassment or failure. It is, at its core, a very anxious friend who means well but is operating almost entirely from fear.

Your intuition is something older and quieter. It isn’t trying to protect you from discomfort; it’s trying to guide you towards truth. It doesn’t particularly care whether the path is easy. It cares whether it’s right.

The problem is that both voices live inside you. Both feel like you. And in the noise of a full, fast, distracted life, working out which one is speaking requires a kind of stillness most of us rarely stop long enough to find.

How to recognise your ego

The ego is loud even when it whispers. It speaks in urgency; in worst-case scenarios and what-ifs. It catastrophises. It compares. It tells you that you’re not ready, not enough, not quite there yet. It dresses fear up as logic and calls it being realistic.

It’s the voice that talks you out of things before you’ve properly considered them. The one that keeps you in situations you’ve outgrown because the alternative feels too uncertain. The one that mistakes familiarity for safety and calls staying put the sensible choice.

When a decision feels anxious, contracted and heavy; that’s usually the ego.

How to recognise your intuition

Intuition is quieter. It doesn’t repeat itself seventeen times or build a case. It simply knows; and says so once, clearly, and then waits.

It speaks in feelings rather than arguments. A sense of expansion when something is right. A sense of contraction when it isn’t. Not the sharp anxiety of fear but the deep, steady certainty of something that simply is.

Intuition rarely shouts. It doesn’t need to. It’s been there all along, underneath the noise, saying the same thing it’s always been saying. Most of us just haven’t been quiet enough to hear it.

When a decision feels calm, clear and true even if it’s also a little frightening; that’s usually your intuition.

How to start hearing it more clearly

Create daily quiet. Even five minutes of stillness; no phone, no input, no agenda; begins to separate the signal from the noise. Intuition speaks in the gaps. Give it some.

Notice where you feel it in your body. Intuition is physical as much as it is mental. A lightness in the chest. A settling in the stomach. Learn where yours lives and you’ll start to recognise it faster.

Ask and then wait. When facing a decision, ask yourself what feels true rather than what seems logical. Then don’t answer immediately. Sleep on it. The ego rushes; intuition is patient.

Journal without editing. Write quickly, without stopping to think. What arrives before the filter kicks in is often the most honest thing you’ll put on the page.

The thing worth knowing

Your intuition has never actually left you. It didn’t need developing or downloading or unlocking. It came with you; it’s been with you every single day.

You just got very busy. And it’s very quiet.

But it’s there. And it’s been waiting, patiently, for you to stop long enough to listen. 🌙
