Grow with the Glow: Gardening by the Moon

As the clocks go back and we steal a little more daylight, it’s the perfect moment to sync up with nature – and maybe even the Moon. You don’t have to grab a torch and start digging at midnight, but planting with the Moon’s phases might just give your garden a little extra magic.

This isn’t a new-age trend. Lunar gardening has been around for centuries, rooted in the belief that the Moon’s gravitational pull affects water, both in the oceans and in our soil. If tides rise and fall with the Moon, maybe our garden growth does too.

Here’s the gist:

Waxing Moon (New → Full) 🌑
When the Moon is growing, so is energy and moisture in the soil. It’s the best time to plant above-ground crops: think strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, and anything that flourishes in the light.

Waning Moon (Full → New) 🌘
As the Moon shrinks, the pull turns downward, perfect for root crops like carrots, potatoes, and beets. It’s also a good time for bulbs, perennials, and pruning back plants that need a rest.

Pruning & Harvesting

The Waning Moon is also considered the best time for pruning, weeding, and harvesting. Some gardeners swear that cutting plants during this phase leads to slower regrowth and fewer diseases, giving your garden time to breathe and restore.

A Little Astro Bonus

If you’re feeling extra cosmic, you can time your planting with the zodiac too:

  • Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio: all fertile water signs great for planting.
  • Leo, Aquarius, Virgo, Gemini: better for weeding and garden upkeep.
  • Fire signs (Leo, Aries, Sagittarius): prune during these for strong growth.

Harvest when the Moon wanes through air or fire signs for the best results.

Plan Your Garden by the Moon

There’s no need to ditch your usual gardening methods. Think of lunar gardening as a way to connect a little deeper with the natural rhythm already guiding us. Our 2026 and 2027  Moon Calendars are now available for tracking the best times to sow, plant, and harvest with each moon phase.

So as the evenings grow lighter, maybe look up before you look down. The Moon might just be guiding your green fingers.
